Jun grunted and turned in his bed. His head felt like exploding and each move hurt. What the hell happened last night? He opened his eyes and blinked because the sunlight shone too brightly into his face. “No way I am going to stand up now,” he murmured.

“Maybe you should get up, because it’s already 10am.” Jun shrieked when he heard an unknown voice behind him. He slowly turned in his bed, his heart beating like mad. His mind started searching for an explanation why someone was here with him in his bedroom. He could remember that he had left his favourite bar last night together with his friends, and he could remember that Sho and Nino had called a taxi for him – but he was sure that he had been alone when he had gone home.

Jun turned to look into two sleepy eyes. The man was smiling at him. “Who the hell are you?”

The man laughed. “Satoshi. Ohno Satoshi.” He smiled brightly. “You can’t remember?”

“No, not at all,” Jun said. “Did we… I mean, have we…” Jun started. Oh god, he had never had a one-night stand before.

“What do you think?” The man asked.

Was he making fun of Jun? Jun’s eyes got smaller. “I have no idea, because I can’t remember…”

The man sat up. He was fully dressed, so they couldn’t have had sex last night, right? But Jun was completely knocked out, so the guy could have dressed again, and Jun wouldn’t have realized anything. “Then think about it,” the guy chuckled. “I have to go now.”

“Wait, wait.” Jun grabbed Satoshi’s hand. “You can’t run away and not tell me what happened.”

Satoshi tilted his head. “I am sure you’ll remember our night, Jun-san. I will go now, and maybe we’ll see each other again.”

With that the man left his bedroom and soon later Jun heard the front door. He was too irritated to run after the man and just stared at the bedroom door. What was the meaning of this? What had happened here right now? Jun’s head started aching. This was the strangest thing he had ever experienced.

He stood up. He needed to talk with his friends, maybe they had seen him leaving with this guy. Of course, they must have seen him. Jun had gone home from the bar, and he hadn't stopped anywhere else – at least he hoped he hadn't done that.

Jun slipped out of his pyjama and froze when he saw his body in the mirror. He had various cuts and bruises on his upper body. Fear overcame him. What the hell had happened to him? What had this guy done to him?

Jun angled for his phone and dialled the first number. “Masaki, what did I do last night after we left the bar?”

He heard his friend yawning. “Why are you already up? It’s too early, Jun-pon.”
“Masaki, please, tell me,” Jun asked. He needed to know about the previous night. He nibbled on his lower lip, like he often did when he was nervous.

He could hear his friend groaning. “We walked out of the bar together. And then you sat in the taxi and drove home. End of the story.”

“Was I alone?” Jun asked.

“Yes, why?” Masaki asked.

“Because…” Jun started but he decided to keep quiet about the man in his bed. First of all because he didn’t want to be questioned about the visitor and second because he wanted to investigate on his own for now. He needed to find this man. “Because I feared that I wasn’t but I woke up alone, and some parts of my memory are missing.”

Masaki chuckled. “You’re getting old – like Sho-chan.”

Jun rolled his eyes. “I don’t need to remind you that you are older?”

“But I don’t lose my memory after a drunk night,” Masaki replied. “I am well aware that I didn’t go home alone.”

“What?” Jun asked.

“Oh, I will tell you another time,” Masaki said. “But now I need some more sleep, bye Jun-pon.”

“Bye,” Jun said and ended the call. On a normal day he would have asked Masaki about his plus one, but now he had other problems. How should he find this guy?

Jun stepped out of his apartment. It was a warm day and the sun tickled on his skin, but Jun was too preoccupied with his headache and his spinning mind about that strange guy in his apartment. Coffee – he definitely needed a coffee now. Maybe afterwards his mind would be clearer.

Jun walked to the small coffee shop not far away from his apartment. Something was strange – something bothered him. He pulled out his wallet and handed the waitress the money. He blinked when he saw his wrist. It was blue and there was a cut spreading up to his palm. He hadn’t realized/noticed it till now, but maybe because he felt each and every bone in his body hurting.

He took the cup and searched for his favourite place at the backside of the shop. There he didn’t feel observed and had time to think about everything and maybe his memory would come back when he’d have some calm moments?

He breathed out and closed his eyes after some gulps of his coffee. He tried to remember. He had walked out of the bar, he could remember that, but he had been alone, he had definitely been alone.

“Do you need help, Jun? Shall I accompany you?” Sho had asked him. He had been tipsy but he had still been able to go home on his own.

“No,” Jun had said. “I’ll take the taxi home.” Jun had waved his hand to stop one of the old black taxis. And then he had gotten into it.

Everything after that was dark. There was no memory, it was like the hours between his way home and the morning where he had woken up had been deleted. Jun rubbed his temples. The headache was getting stronger and he had the feeling that something shoved against his head with full might.

Jun turned his head to look out of the big window right next to him. Outside he could see that strange guy from the morning, leaning against a traffic sign. He was observing Jun, and Jun didn’t like that. He stood up, not caring about the almost full cup of coffee and headed outside. “You,” he said and pointed at the guy, who just stood there without moving. “What have you done to me?” Jun asked. “Did you give me drugs?”

The man was still looking at him with an intense calmness. “No.” He shook his head. Jun’s anger was rising. No? A simple ‘no’? Was this guy fooling him?

“No?” Jun breathed out. “What the hell did you do to me?” Jun didn’t care about the other people turning to look at them, because he was yelling far too loudly.

“I didn’t do anything to you, Jun.” He was still calm. “You have to remember on your own, otherwise I can’t help you.”

Jun had to take a few breaths to not freak out and jump this guy. “I can’t remember anything. And I am hurt, so what did you do to me you perverted old man.”

To his surprise the guy laughed. “Old man? No one has called me that before.”

Jun blinked. This guy made fun of him. “Are you kidding me?”

Satoshi shook his head. “No, Jun.” He suddenly got earnest. “I want you to remember, and I will help you, okay?” He asked. He stretched his arm out and took Jun’s hand.

Jun wanted to draw away, but in the end he let himself being pulled along. “Where are we going?” He wanted to know, but he got no answer.

Jun had a strange feeling spreading around the warm feeling he had because Satoshi was still holding Jun’s hand in his. Jun was still trying to remember about last night, but there was only emptiness. Just one thing he was now sure about: he hadn’t slept with this guy. His heart would have told him – it sounded strange, but Jun was really sensitive about things like that.

“We didn't have any body contact last night, right?” Jun asked and Satoshi turned to him, a smile curling around his lips.

“No, not like you think,” Satoshi answered.

“And what do you mean with this now?” Jun sighed. This whole thing was getting more and more frustrating and in the end Jun just wished to get back to his bed. Jun wasn’t surprised that he didn’t get an answer from Satoshi.

They walked through the streets till they reached a small plateau where they had the perfect view over a part of their town. Jun looked around. “What shall we do here?”

Satoshi sat on the wooden fence, which should prevent people from falling down the hill – and it was pretty high. “Look around,” Satoshi said.

Jun stepped to him, but he didn’t dare to sit onto it. He preferred standing behind the fence. He looked around, but there was still nothing coming to his mind. He turned around and leaned against the fence. He blinked when he saw that a second fence on the other side of the street was damaged. Something in his head started stinging. He had been here, but when and why?

“Last night – I came here, right?” Jun asked. Satoshi nodded at him. “Who are you?” Jun asked further. He had always had the ability to read people, and Satoshi was special, he was sure about it.

“I have been taking care of you since you were a child,” Satoshi answered.

Jun knelt down when the stinging pain got stronger and he almost fainted. He remembered his childhood and this special friend he had had back then – it was another child his age, and his name was … “I can remember you following me since I was a child. But who are you?”

Satoshi jumped from the fence and knelt next to Jun. “What do you think?”

Jun turned to the broken fence and he could see some glass spread on the ground there. And there were traces of an accident. Jun yelled out when the headache hurt overwhelmingly and the wound on his hand started pounding. He realized that he was pressing his hand to fight against fainting. He could feel a hand stroking his back. “Everything is okay, Jun,” Satoshi said calmingly.

“You played together with me in the park, and you saved me when I was about to fall down from the swing,” Jun said and suddenly more pictures appeared in his mind. “You also watched over me some years ago when I wanted to pass the street where an accident happened.” His heartbeat increased. “And you saved me now?”

To his surprise it really calmed Jun down. He breathed in and out a few times and opened his eyes to look at Satoshi. “What happened here last night?”

“You still can’t remember?”

Jun shook his head. He froze for a moment. “Wait a moment, you were here at this place. I can remember your voice and your hands on my shoulders.”

Satoshi nodded at him. “Yes, I was here, and you know why?”

Jun’s thoughts were running wild and suddenly the fog in his mind cleared up. “Oh my god, I had an accident.” He sat on the ground staring at the glass and the broken fence. “I was in this taxi and the driver lost control over the car at one point.”

Satoshi nodded at him. “And?”

Jun looked at Satoshi. “You pulled me out of the car and brought me home.” Jun paused for a second/minute. “Who or what are you, Satoshi?”

Satoshi sat next to him, his legs bent and his hands around his legs. “Can’t you imagine what I am?”

“Something like a guardian angel?” Jun asked. “But you are human, everyone can see you.”

Satoshi chuckled. “Being a guardian angel doesn’t mean to be invisible.” He looked at Jun. “I mean I was invisible for a certain time in your life, but now I am here to help you again.”

“Why?” Jun asked. “I mean why were you invisible?”

Satoshi tilted his head. “Because you had someone who took care of you, and you didn’t necessarily need me. But now I am here again.”

Jun shook his head. Everything was running wild in his mind. This was too confusing. “You brought me home instead of calling the ambulance?”

Satoshi nodded. “See that glass over there?” Jun moved his eyes to where Satoshi was pointing.

“Yes.”

“The ambulance lost control over the car, like the taxi driver. There was some kind of oil on the street which made everything slippery,” Satoshi explained. “And the ambulance crashed into the backside of the taxi.”

Jun swallowed. He knew what that meant. “It would have been my death, right? The ambulance would have bumped into the side where I was sitting?”

Satoshi nodded. “Yes.”

“Well, I guess I have to thank you?” Jun asked. He didn’t know how to react now.

“It’s my job.” Satoshi raised his hands.

“But why did you stay at my side all this time?” Jun asked. “I mean you always disappeared afterwards and you just came back when you had to save me, which was plenty of times already.” Jun scratched his head. He really had gotten into a few more or less dangerous situations.

Satoshi shrugged. “I guess I like being at your side. And you look beautiful when you sleep.”

Jun was sure he was blushing. “So you are perverted,” he tried joking, but he knew his voice sounded far too high. Jun brushed through his hair. Some more memories appeared in his mind. “Wait a moment, in the bar...” he said and looked at Satoshi. Now he was sure the other was blushing.

“I hoped that I was able to erase this memory for you,” Satoshi almost whispered.

“No, no.” Jun’s eyes got small. “I remember that I danced with a guy and it was you, right?”

Satoshi nibbled on his lower lip and didn’t react, but Jun knew he had hit the point. “And we kissed, I remember it.”

Now Satoshi sighed. “I am not allowed to do this, but you were so close to me, and I couldn’t resist. I've followed you for years now, and I was never able to make you really notice me, and it was like a dream came true.” Jun wondered how honest Satoshi was with him.

“So you like me?” Jun asked. He couldn’t deny that Satoshi was his type and the parts he could remember made a warm feeling spread in him, so he had definitely liked the kiss.

“Yes.” Satoshi stood up and Jun did the same. “But I am not allowed to like someone, so I broke a rule.”

“And that means?” Jun asked.

“I was able to stay with you over night because I lost my job after saving you. They were kind enough to let me finish this last job, but now I am jobless.” He smiled sadly. “I got an apartment in town and the chance to work in an office, and yeah, I don’t know what to think about my new job, but I definitely don’t regret what I did last night.”

He had lost his job because of Jun? Jun shook his head. “You can’t run away now,” he said when Satoshi started walking down the street.

Satoshi turned to him. “I can’t?”

“How about drinking a coffee together and talking about everything properly?” Jun suggested. He was astonished about his own reaction, but Satoshi didn’t feel like a stranger to him, maybe because he had been part of his entire life, without Jun knowing about it.

Satoshi’s eyes started sparkling. “Really?”

Jun nodded. “I want to get to know you.” He smiled. “And I want to know how many times you saved my life.”

Satoshi’s smile brightened. “You are really clumsy, so I guess I have a lot to tell you.”

~~~
Jun woke up in the morning, grunting. He had a terrible headache. They had been out for too long. He turned in his bed and smiled. Satoshi lay next to him, his eyes closed, a smile curling around his lips.
The coffee had turned into lunch, lunch had turned into dinner, and dinner had turned into visiting a bar, and the bar had turned into Jun’s apartment and some more glasses of wine.
In the end they had both laughed about a stupid joke Jun had made and suddenly had seen Satoshi moving closer and closer until he was able to kiss Jun, and Jun had happily agreed to this kiss and leaned into it. It hadn't felt awkward or strange, because he had had the feeling that Satoshi had always been at his side and that he had been the missing piece in his life, making him complete.
Jun smiled and brushed Satoshi’s face before he snuggled closer to find some more restful sleep.
I love the mystery touch of this! At first it seemed like Satoshi is quite creepy or even dangerous, then I thought Jun got beaten up and Satoshi helped him. But I didn't get who and what he was, until you revealed it! Now it makes sense. I love that they basically grew up together and Satoshi was always at Jun's side, protecting him. So happy they can be together now! 💙💜
